Effective immediately, Vivian Fluellen will serve as the interim head of the Fort Valley State University Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Fluellen is a graduate of FVSU, who majored in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. She received her master’s degree from Iowa State University in textiles and apparel, and subsequently completed a certificate program for family financial planning at the same institution. She will receive her doctorate in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from Iowa State this May.
Having worked at the university more than 20 years, Fluellen has served in various roles including coordinator of Family and Consumer Sciences Education, as well as interim program leader and extension specialist for the Cooperative Extension Program.
Fluellen is looking forward to her new role and working with students and faculty to accomplish the goals of the department and university.
Dr. Linda Johnson, who has been chairing the department for more than 10 years, has decided to step down. She will be teaching full-time.
“We sincerely appreciate Dr. Johnson’s service to this college and the Department of Family and Consumers Sciences over the years,” said Dr. Govind Kannan, FVSU’s dean for the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology. “We are thankful that she will continue to serve our students in one of the most important ways, which is in the classroom. I am glad Mrs. Fluellen has agreed to step into this role, and we look forward to what’s to come under her leadership. I am confident in her abilities to advance the department.”
