FVSU Family and Consumer Sciences programs earn reaccreditation

Fort Valley State University students majoring in programs within the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Department can continue to reap the benefits of graduating from a fully accredited program.

The Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) voted to grant reaccreditation to FVSU’s Bachelor of Science degrees in infant and child development and food and nutrition through the spring of 2021. Administrators in FVSU’s College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology received the news May 7.

AAFCS is a national organization whose mission is to provide leadership and support for students, professionals and organizations in the field of family and consumer sciences. “AAFCS accreditation is a status granted to family and consumer sciences units within colleges or universities that meet or exceed quality standards established by the Council of Accreditation,” said Dr. Vivian Fluellen, chair of FVSU’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department.

Fluellen said accreditation is important because it ensures the public that FVSU is providing quality educational experiences that prepare students for their future professional roles. She also said those factors surrounding accreditation give students an advantage when looking for employment. In addition, Fluellen said the accreditation process helps colleges and universities improve their family and consumer sciences programs by advancing academic quality, displaying accountability and giving advice for needed improvement when necessary.

In order for FVSU’s FCS Programs to receive accreditation renewal, they were required to meet specific standards set by the AAFCS. This included the availability of student internships, job placements of students, teaching effectiveness of the faculty and student involvement in community outreach.

Fluellen said the efforts of the FCS faculty, staff, students and alumni ensured the success of reaccreditation.

Angela Dougé, assistant professor and director of FVSU’s Food and Nutrition Program, said accreditation renewal says that our programs are meeting or exceeding the expectations set by the AAFCS. As a result, she said FVSU graduates are prepared to go into the workforce and become highly skilled practitioners in their respective fields.

Sharon Sims, a freshman infant and child development major, said she feels at ease knowing that her program is fully accredited. Sims’ said she is aware that a lot of employers are looking for graduates from accredited programs, and would recommend FVSU’s program to future students because it has an excellent director and instructors.

“Securing this full reaccreditation for the department of Family and Consumer Sciences is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all faculty and staff of the department.  I commend Dr. Fluellen’s outstanding leadership,” said Dr. Govind Kannan, dean of Fort Valley State University’s College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.
