Two Fort Valley State University senior 4-H members recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in a national event.

Aniya Green, a senior at Twiggs County High School, and Evann Petway, a senior at Peach County High School, represented FVSU’s 4-H delegation at the National 4-H Conference held April 15-19.

They were two of the many 4-H’ers from across the country aged 15-19 in attendance who participated in several team-building activities. One of them included forming a roundtable group with their peers after selecting a topic of interest, developing a 45-minute briefing and presenting their recommendations to a selected federal agency or partner at their federal building.

Green’s presentation to the U.S. Peace Corps covered the question, “How might the Peace Corps better engage with communities, partners and individuals to encourage and facilitate employment opportunities for young people in the agricultural sector?”

Evann Petway’s presentation to the National Park Service answered the question, “How can we use technology to help inform people about what parks represent?” The Peach County High student also led the Pledge of Allegiance at the National 4-H ceremony at the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.

Phillip Petway, FVSU’s Twiggs County 4-H agent, served as the lead chaperone for the delegation. He was pleased that the two FVSU 4-H’ers experienced speaking at a national event.

“They successfully used their skills and attributes in preparing their presentations for the national conference and participating in roundtable group discussions. Additionally, I was proud of how actively engaged and vocal they were in sharing their thoughts and ideas,” Petway said.

The group also toured several sites and monuments, including the National Mall.
